Duaa
يَا مَنْ يَرْحَمُ مَنْ لا يَرْحَمُهُ الْعِبَادُ.
yā man yarḥamu man lā yarḥamuhu al-ʿibād
O He who has mercy upon him toward whom the servants show no mercy!
وَيَا مَنْ يَقْبَلُ مَنْ لا تَقْبَلُهُ الْبِلاَدُ.
wayā man yaqbalu man lā taqbaluhu albilād
O He who accepts him whom the cities will not accept!
وَيَا مَن لاَ يَحْتَقِرُ أَهْلَ الْحَاجَةِ إلَيْهِ.
wa yā man lā yahtaqiru ahl al-ḥājaẗi ilayh
O He who looks not down upon those who have need of Him!
وَيَا مَنْ لا يُخَيِّبُ المَلِحِّيْنَ عَلَيْـهِ،
wa yā man lā yukhayyibu al-malihhīna ʿalayhi
O He who disappoints not those who implore Him!
وَيَا مَنْ لاَ يَجْبَهُ بِالرَّدِّ أَهْلَ الدَّالَّةِ عَليهِ،
wa yā man lā yajbahū bi-r-raddi ahlad-dāllati ʿalayhi
O He who slaps not the brow of the people of boldness toward Him with rejection!
وَيَا مَنْ يَجْتَبِي صَغِيرَ مَايُتْحَفُ بِهِ،
wa yā man yajtabi ṣaghīra mayutḥafu bihī
O He who collects the little that is given to Him
وَيَشْكُرُ يَسِيرَ مَا يُعْمَلُ لَهُ.
wa yashkur yasira ma yu'malu lahu
and shows gratitude for the paltry that is done for Him!
وَيَامَنْ يَشْكُرُ عَلَى الْقَلِيْلِ، وَيُجَازيْ بِالْجَلِيلِ،
wa yaman yashkur ʿalal-qaleel, wa yujāzi bil-jaleel
O He who shows gratitude for the small and rewards with the great!
وَيَا مَنْ يَدْنُو إلَى مَنْ دَنا مِنْهُ
wayā man yadnū ʾilā man dana minhu
O He who comes close to him who comes close to Him!
وَيَا مَنْ يَدعُو إلَى نَفْسِهِ مَنْ أَدْبَرَ عَنْهُ،
wayā man yadʿū ilā nafsihi man ʾadbar ʿanhū
O He who invites to Himself him who turns his back on Him!
وَيَا مَنْ لا يُغَيِّرُ النِّعْمَةَ، وَلا يُبَادِرُ بِالنَّقِمَةِ،
wa yā man lā yughayyiru al-niʿmata, wa lā yubādiru bi al-naqimah
O He who changes not favour and rushes not to vengeance!
وَيَا مَنْ يُثْمِرُ الْحَسَنَةَ حَتَّى يُنْمِيَهَا،
wayā man yuthmiru al-ḥasanah ḥattá yunmiyahā
O He who causes the good deed to bear fruit so that He may make it grow,
وَيَتَجَاوَزُ عَنِ السَّيِّئَةِ حَتَّى يُعَفِّيَهَا.
wa yatajaawazu ʿani as-sayyiʾati hatta yuʿaffiyahaa
and overlooks the evil deed so that He may efface it!
انْصَرَفَتِ الآمَالُ دُونَ مَدى كَرَمِكَ بِالحَاجَاتِ
'inṣarafatil-āmālu dūna madā karamika bil-ḥājāt'
Hopes turn back with needs fulfilled short of the extent of Thy generosity,
وَامْتَلاَتْ بِفَيْضِ جُودِكَ أَوْعِيَةُ الطَّلِبات،
waamtalat bifaḍi judika aw`iyatu alṭṭalibat
the cups of requests fill up with the overflow of Thy munificence,
وَتَفَسَّخَتْ دُونَ بُلُوغِ نَعْتِـكَ الصِّفَاتُ،
wa tafassakhat dunā bulūghin naʿtika al-ṣifātu
and attributes fall apart without reaching Thy description.
فَلَكَ الْعُلُوُّ الأعْلَى فَوْقَ كُلِّ عَال،
falakal-'uluwwul-a'la fawqa kulli 'aal
For to Thee belongs the highest highness above everything high,
وَالْجَلاَلُ الأمْجَدُ فَوْقَ كُلِّ جَلاَل،
wa al-jalālu al-amjadu fawqa kulli jalāl
and the most glorious majesty beyond every majesty!
كُلُّ جَلِيْل عِنْدَكَ صَغِيرٌ،
kullu jaliilin 'indaka saghiirun
Everything majestic before Thee is small,
وَكُلُّ شَرِيف فِي جَنْبِ شَرَفِكَ حَقِيرٌ،
wa kullu sharifin fi janbi sharafika haqirun
everything eminent beside Thy eminence vile!
خَابَ الْوَافِدُونَ عَلَى غَيْرِكَ،
khaba al-wāfidūn ʿalā ghayrika
Those who reach other than Thee are disappointed,
وَخَسِرَ الْمُتَعَرِّضُونَ إلاَّ لَكَ، وَضَاعَ الْمُلِمُّونَ إلاّ بِكَ،
wa khasira al-mutaʿarriḍūna illā laka, wa ḍāʿa al-mulimmūna illā bika
those who present themselves to other than Thee have lost, those who stay with other than Thee have perished,
وَأَجْدَبَ الْمُنْتَجِعُـونَ إلاَّ مَنِ انْتَجَعَ فَضْلَكَ،
wa-ajdaba al-muntajiʿūna illā mani intajʿa fadluka
and those who retreat - except those who retreat to Thy bounty - are desolate!
بَابُكَ مَفْتُوحٌ لِلرَّاغِبِينَ، وَجُودُكَ مُبَاحٌ لِلسَّائِلِينَ،
bābuka mafṭūḥun lil-rāghibīn, wa-jūduka mubāḥun li-lsāʾilīn
Thy door is open to the beseechers, Thy munificence free to the askers,
وَإغاثَتُكَ قَرِيبَةٌ مِنَ الْمُسْتَغِيْثِينَ،
wa-ighāthatuka qarībatun min al-mustaghīthīn
Thy help near to the help-seekers!
لاَ يَخِيبُ مِنْـكَ الآمِلُونَ، وَلاَ يَيْأَسُ مِنْ عَطَائِكَ الْمُتَعَرِّضُونَ،
lā yakhību minkal-āmilūn, wa lā yayʾasu min ʿatāʾika al-mutaʿarridūn
The expectant are not disappointed by Thee, those who present themselves despair not of Thy bestowal,
وَلا يَشْقَى بِنَقْمَتِكَ الْمُسْتَغْفِرُونَ.
walā yashqā binaqmatika al-mustaghfirūn
the forgiveness-seekers become not wretched through Thy vengeance!
رِزْقُكَ مَبْسُوطٌ لِمَنْ عَصَاكَ،
rizquka mabsootun liman ʿasak
Thy provision is spread among those who disobey Thee,
وَحِلْمُكَ مُعْتَـرِضٌ لِمَنْ نَاوَاكَ،
wa ḥil-muka muʿtaridhun liman naawaka
Thy clemency presents itself to those hostile toward Thee,
عَادَتُكَ الإحْسَـانُ إلَى الْمُسِيئينَ،
ʿādatuka al-iḥsānu ilā al-musīʾīn
Thy habit is beneficence toward the evildoers,
وَسُنَّتُـكَ الإبْقَاءُ عَلَى الْمُعْتَدِينَ
wa sunnatuka al-ibqā'u ʿalā al-muʿtadīn
and Thy wont is to spare the transgressors,
حَتَّى لَقَدْ غَرَّتْهُمْ أَنَاتُكَ عَنِ الرُّجُوعِ،
ḥattá laqad ghar-rathum ʾanātuka ʿanir-rujūʿi
so much so that Thy lack of haste deludes them from returning,
وَصَدَّهُمْ إمْهَالُكَ عَن النُّزُوعِ.
waṣaddahum ʾimhāluka ʿan an-nuzūʿi
and Thy disregard bars them from desisting!
وَإنَّمَا تَأَنَّيْتَ بهمْ لِيَفِيئُوا إلَى أَمْرِكَ،
wa innamā taʾannayta bihim liyafee'u ilā amrik
Thou actest without haste toward them so that they will come back to Thy command
وَأَمْهَلْتَهُمْ ثِقَةً بِدَوَامِ مُلْكِكَ،
wa'amhaltahum thiqatan bidawami mulkika
and Thou disregardest them confident in the permanence of Thy kingdom,
فَمَنْ كَانَ مِنْ أَهْلِ السَّعَادَةِ خَتَمْتَ لَهُ بِهَا،
faman kana min ahli al-saʿādah khatamta lahū bihā
so Thou sealest him who is worthy of it with felicity,
وَمَنْ كَانَ مِنْ أَهْلِ الشَّقَاوَةِ خَذَلْتَهُ لَهَا،
wa-man kaana min ahli ash-shaqawaati khadhalatahu lahā
and Thou abandonest him who is worthy of it to wretchedness!
كُلُّهُمْ صَائِرُونَ إلَى حُكْمِكَ وَأُمُورُهُمْ آئِلَةٌ إلَى أَمْـرِكَ،
kulluhum sa'iroon ila hukmika wa umooruhum ailatun ila amrik
All of them come home to Thy decree, their affairs revert to Thy command;
لَمْ يَهِنْ عَلَى طُـولِ مُـدَّتِهِمْ سُلْطَانُـكَ
lam yahin ʿalá ṭūli muddatihim sultānuk
Thy authority grows not feeble through their drawn out term,
وَلَمْ يَـدْحَضْ لِتَـرْكِ مُعَاجَلَتِهِمْ بُرْهَانُكَ.
walam yadhaḍ li-tariki muʿājalatihim burhānuka
Thy proof is not refuted by the failure to hurry after them.
حُجَّتُكَ قَائِمَةٌ لاَ تُدْحَضُ،
ḥujjatuka qāʾimah lā tudhaḍḍh
Thy argument is established, never refuted,
وَسُلْطَانُكَ ثَابِتٌ لا يَزُولُ،
wa sulṭānuka thābitun lā yazūl
Thy authority fixed, never removed.
فَالْوَيْلُ الدَّائِمُ لِمَنْ جَنَحَ عَنْكَ،
fa al-waylu al-da'imu liman janaha 'anka
Permanent woe belongs to him who inclines away from Thee,
وَالْخَيْبَةُ الْخَاذِلَةُ لِمَنْ خَابَ مِنْكَ،
wal-khaybah al-khāẓilah liman khāba minka
forsaking disappointment to him who is disappointed by Thee,
وَالشَّقاءُ الاشْقَى لِمَنِ اغْتَرَّ بِكَ.
wa alshshaqā'u alashqa li mani ightarra bika
and the most wretched wretchedness to him who is deluded about Thee!
مَا أكْثَرَ تَصَرُّفَهُ فِي عَذَابِكَ،
mā akthara taṣarrufahu fī ʿadhābika
How much he will move about in Thy chastisement!
وَمَا أَطْوَلَ تَرَدُّدَهُ فِيْ عِقَابِكَ،
wa mā aṭwal taraddudahu fī ʿiqābika
How long he will frequent Thy punishment!
وَمَا أَبْعَدَ غَايَتَهُ مِنَ الْفَرَجِ،
wa mā ʾabʿada ghāyatahu min al-faraj
How far his utmost end from relief!
وَمَا أَقْنَطَهُ مِنْ سُهُولَةِ الْمَخْرَجِ
wa mā aqnathu min suhulati al-makhraj
How he will despair of an easy exit!
عَدْلاً مِنْ قَضَائِكَ لاَ تَجُورُ فِيهِ،
ʿadlan min qaḍāʾika lā tajūru fīhi
[All of this] as justice from Thy decree (Thou art not unjust in it!),
وَإنْصَافاً مِنْ حُكْمِكَ لاَ تَحِيفُ عَلَيْهِ،
wa-inṣāfan min ḥukmika lā taḥīfu ʿalayhi
and equity from Thy judgement (Thou dost not act wrongfully against him!).
فَقَدْ ظَاهَرْتَ الْحُجَجَ، وَأَبْلَيْتَ الاعْذَارَ،
faqad ẓahartal-ḥujaja wa ablaytal-iʿḏāra
Thou supported the arguments, tested the excuses,
وَقَـدْ تَقَدَّمْتَ بِـالْوَعِيْـدِ وَتَلَطَّفْتَ فِي التَّرْغِيْبِ،
wa qad taqaddamta bil waʿīd wa taltaffat fi al-targhīb
began with threats, showed gentleness with encouragement,
وَضَرَبْتَ الامْثَالَ، وَأَطَلْتَ الاِمْهَالَ،
waḍarabta al-amthāl, wa-aṭalt al-imhāl
struck similitudes, made long the respite,
وَأَخَّرْتَ وَأَنْتَ مُسْتَطِيعٌ لِلْمُعَاجَلَةِ،
wa'akhkhirta wa anta mustaṭīʿun lilmuʿājalati
delayed, while Thou art able to hurry,
وَتَأَنَّيْتَ وَأَنْتَ مَليءٌ بِالْمُبَادَرَةِ،
wa ta'annayta wa anta maly'un bilmubadara
and acted without haste, while Thou art full of quick accomplishment!
لَمْ تَكُنْ أَنَاتُكَ عَجْزاً، وَلا إمْهَالُكَ وَهْناً،
lam takun 'anatuka 'ajzan, wa-la 'imhaluka wahnan
Not because of incapacity is Thy slowness, feebleness Thy giving respite,
وَلاَ إمْسَاكُكَ غَفْلَةً، وَلاَ انْتِظَارُكَ مُدَارَاةً،
walā imsākuka ghaflah, walā intiẓāruka mudārāh
heedlessness Thy showing restraint, dissemblance Thy waiting!
بَلْ لِتَكُونَ حُجَّتُكَ أَبْلَغَ، وَكَرَمُكَ أكمَلَ،
bal litakūna ḥujjatuka ablagh, wa karamuka akmal
But that Thy argument be more conclusive, Thy generosity more perfect,
وَإحْسَانُكَ أَوْفَى وَنِعْمَتُكَ أَتَمَّ،
wa-iḥsānuka awfā wa-niʿmatuka atamma
Thy beneficence more exhaustive, Thy favour more complete!
كُلُّ ذلِكَ كَانَ وَلَمْ تَزَلْ، وَهُوَ كائِنٌ وَلاَ تَزَالُ ،
kullu dhālika kāna wa lam tazal, wa huwa kā'inun wa lā tazālu
All of this has been and always was, is and ever will be.
حُجَّتُكَ أَجَلُّ مِنْ أَنْ توصَفَ بِكُلِّهَا،
ḥujjatuka ʾajallu min an tūṣafa bikullihā
Thy argument is greater than that its totality be described,
وَمَجْدُكَ أَرْفَـعُ مِنْ أَنْ يُحَدَّ بِكُنْهِهِ،
wa majduka arfa'u min an yuhadda bikunhihi
Thy glory more elevated than that it be limited in its core,
وَنِعْمَتُكَ أكْثَرُ مِنْ أَنْ تُحْصَى بِأَسْرِهَا،
wa niʿmatuka aktharu min an tuḥṣā bi-asrihā
Thy favour more abundant than that its entirety be counted,
وَإحْسَانُكَ أكْثَرُ مِنْ أَنْ تُشْكَرَ عَلَى أَقَلِّهِ،
wa-iḥsānuka aktharu min an tushkara ʿalā aqallih
Thy beneficence more abundant than that thanks be given for its least amount!
وَقَدْ قَصَّرَ بِيَ السُّكُوتُ عَنْ تَحْمِيدِكَ،
waqad qassara biya al-sukutu ʿan tahmidiكَ،
Speechlessness has made me fall short of praising Thee,
وَفَهَّهَنِي الإمْسَاكُ عَنْ تَمْجيدِكَ،
wa fahhahani al-im'sāku ʿan tamjīdik
restraint has made me powerless to glorify Thee,
وَقُصَارَايَ الإقْرَارُ بِالْحُسُورِ
wa quṣārāy al-iqrār bi al-ḥusoor
and the most I can do is admit to inability,
لاَ رَغْبَةً ـ يا إلهِي ـ بَلْ عَجْزاً،
lā raghbaṭan, yā ilāhī, bal ʿajzan
not out of desire, my God, but out of incapacity.
فَهَا أَنَا ذَا أَؤُمُّكَ بِالْوِفَادَةِ، وَأَسأَلُكَ حُسْنَ الرِّفَادَةِ،
fahā anā dhā aʾummuka bil-wifādah, wa as'aluka ḥusn ar-riifādah
So here I am: I repair to Thee by coming forward, and I ask from Thee good support
فَصلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّد وَآلِـهِ وَاسْمَعْ نَجْوَايَ،
faṣalli ʿalā muḥammad wa ālihī wa-smaʿ najwaya
So bless Muhammad and his Household, hear my whispered words,
وَاسْتَجِبْ دُعَائِي وَلاَ تَخْتِمْ يَوْمِيَ بِخَيْبَتِي،
wa-istajib du'ā'ī wa-lā takhtim yawmiya bi-khaybati
grant my supplication, seal not my day with disappointment,
وَلاَ تَجْبَهْنِي بِالرَّدِّ فِي مَسْأَلَتِي،
wa lā tajbah-nī bir-raddi fī mas'alatī
slap not my brow by rejecting my request,
وَأكْرِمْ مِنْ عِنْدِكَ مُنْصَرَفِي وَإلَيْكَ مُنْقَلَبِي،
waakrim min ʿindika munṣarafī waʾilayka munqalabī
and make noble my coming from Thee and my going back to Thee!
إنَّكَ غَيْرُ ضَائِق بِمَا تُرِيْدُ وَلاَ عَاجِزٍ عَمَّا تُسْأَلُ،
'innaka ghayru ḍā'iq bimā turīdu walā ʿājiz 'ammā tusalu
Surely Thou art not constrained by what Thou desirest, nor incapable of what Thou art asked!
وَأَنْتَ عَلَى كُلِّ شَيْء قَدِيْرٌ،
wa-anta ʿala kulli shay'in qadīrun
Thou art powerful over everything,
وَلا حَوْلَ وَلا قُوَّةَ إلاَّ بِاللهِ الْعَلِيِّ الْعَظِيمِ.
wa lā ḥawla wa lā quwwata illā billāhi al-ʿaliyyi al-ʿaẓīm
and there is no force and no strength save in God, the All-high, the All-mighty!
