In Seeking Asylum With God
Duaa
اللّهُمَّ إن تَشَأْ تعفُ عَنّا فَبِفضْلِكَ ،
allāhumma in tashaʾ taʿfu ʿannā fabifadlika
O God, if Thou willest, Thou wilt pardon us through Thy bounty
وَانْ تَشَأْ تُعَذِّبْنا فَبَعدْلِكَ. فَسَهِّلْ لَنَا عَفْوَكَ بِمنِّكَ ،
wa in tasha'a tu'azzibna fa badluka. fasahhil lana 'afwaka bimannika
and if Thou willest, Thou wilt chastise us through Thy justice. So make our ways smooth to Thy pardon through Thy kindness
وَأَجِرْنَا مِنْ عَذَابِكَ بِتَجاوُزكَ; فَإنَّهُ لاَ طاقَةَ لَنَا بَعدلِكَ،
wa-ajirna min ʿadhabika bi-tajawuzika, fa-innahu la taqata lana baʿdaka
and grant us sanctuary from Thy chastisement through Thy forbearance, for none of us has the endurance for Thy justice
وَلاَ نجاةَ لأحَد مِنّا دُوْنَ عَفْوِكَ.
wa lā najāta li-aḥadin minnā dūna ʿafwikā
and none of us can reach deliverance without Thy pardon!
يا غَنِيَّ الأغْنياء هَا نَحَنُ عِبادُكَ بين يدَيكَ
yā ġanīyy al-aġniyāʾ, hā nahanu ʿibāduka bayna yadayka
O Richest of the rich! Here we are, Thy servants, before Thee.
وَأَنَا أَفقَرُ الفْقَراء إليْكَ فَأجْبُرْ فاقَتَنا بِوُسْعِكَ ،
wa-ana afqaru al-fuqarāʾ ilayka fa-ajbur faqatanā bi-wusʿika
I am the neediest of the needy toward Thee, so redress our neediness through Thy plenty
ولا تَقْطَعَ رَجَاءنا بِمَنْعِكَ فَتَكُوْنَ قد أَشْقَيْتَ مَنِ اسْتَسْعَدَ بِكَ ،
wa lā taqṭaʿ rajāʾanā bi-manʿik, fatakoona qad ashqayta mani istasʿada bika
and cut us not off from our hopes through Thy withholding, lest Thou makest wretched him who seeks felicity through Thee
وَجَرَمْتَ مَنِ اسْتَرْفَدَ فَضْلَكَ.
wa-ja-ram-ta mani as-tar-fa-da fa-dlaka
and deprivest him who seeks help from Thy bounty!
فَإلى مَنْ حيْنئذ مُنْقَلَبُنَا عَنْكَ ،
fa'ilā man ḥīnaḏa munqalabunā 'anka
Then to whom would we return after Thee?
وإلى أيْنَ مَذهَبُنَا عن بَابِكَ ،
wa'ilā aynamaẓhabunā ʿan bābika
Where would we go from Thy gate?
سُبْحَنَكَ نَحْنُ المضْطُّرون الذّينَ أَوْجَبْتَ إجابَتَهُمْ ،
subḥānaka naḥnu al-muḍḍaṭṭūn alladhīna awjabta ijābatuhum
Glory be to Thee! We are the distressed, the response to whom Thou hast made incumbent,
وَأهْلُ السُّوْء الذّيْنَ وَعَدْتَ الْكَشْفَ عَنْهُمْ.
wa-ahlus-sū'u alladhīna waʿadtal-kashfa ʿanhum
the people from whom Thou hast promised to remove the evil.
وَأَشْبَـهُ الأَشْياءِ بِمَشِيَّتِـكَ ،
wa ashbahul-ashya'i bimashiyyatika
That thing most resembling Thy will
وَأَوْلَى الأمُورِ بِكَ فِيْ عَظَمَتِكَ رَحْمَةُ مَنِ اسْتَرْحَمَكَ،
wa-awla al-amoori bika fee `adamatika rahmatu mani istarhamaka
and that affair most worthy for Thee in Thy mightiness is showing mercy to him who asks Thee for mercy
وَغَوْثُ مَنِ اسْتَغَاثَ بِكَ، فَارْحَمْ تَضَرُّعَنَا إلَيْكَ،
wa-ghawthu mani-staghatha bika, farham tadarruna ilayk
and helping him who seeks help from Thee. So show mercy upon our pleading with Thee
وَأَغْنِنَا إذْ طَرَحْنَـا أَنْفُسَنَا بَيْنَ يَـدَيْكَ.
waʾaghninā ʾidh ṭarahnā ʾanfusanā bayna yadayk
and free us from need when we throw ourselves before Thee!
أللَّهُمَّ إنَّ الشَّيْطَانَ قَدْ شمِتَ بِنَا إذْ شَايَعْنَاهُ عَلَى مَعْصِيَتِكَ،
allāhumma innash shayṭāna qad shamat binā idh shāyʿanāhu ʿalā maʿṣiyatika
O God, Satan will gloat over us if we follow him in disobeying Thee,
فَصَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّد وَآلِهِ
faṣalli ʿalā muḥammad wa ālih
so bless Muhammad and his Household
وَلا تُشْمِتْهُ بِنَا بَعْدَ تَرْكِنَا إيَّاهُ لَكَ،
walā tušmit-hu binā baʿda tarik-nā 'iyyā-hu lak
and let him not gloat over us after we have renounced him for Thee
وَرَغْبَتِنَا عَنْهُ إلَيْكَ.
wa raghbatina anhu ilayka
and beseeched Thee against him!
