His Supplication In The Morning And Evening
Duaa
أَلْحَمْدُ للهِ الَّذِي خَلَقَ اللَّيْلَ وَالنَّهارَ بِقُوَّتِهِ،
al-ḥamdulillāhi al-ladhī khalaqa al-layla wa al-nahāra bi quwwatih
Praise belongs to God, who created night and day through His strength,
وَمَيَّزَ بَيْنَهُمَا بِقُدْرَتِهِ،
wa mayyaza baynahuma bi qudratihi
set them apart through His power,
وَجَعَلَ لِكُلِّ وَاحِد مِنْهُمَا حَدّاً مَحْدُوداً، وَأَمَداً مَمْدُوداً ،
wa jaʿala li-kulli wāḥidin minhumā ḥaddan maḥdūdan, wa ʾamadan mamdūdan
and appointed for each a determined limit and a drawn-out period.
يُولِجُ كُلَّ وَاحِد مِنْهُمَا فِي صَاحِبِهِ،
yu'liju kulla wahidin minhuma fi sahibihi
He makes each of the two enter into its companion,
وَيُولِجُ صَاحِبَهُ فِيهِ بِتَقْدِير مِنْهُ لِلْعِبَادِ
wa yu'lijus sahibahu feehi bitaqdeer minhu lil'ibad
and makes its companion enter into it, as an ordainment from Him for His servants
فِيمَا يَغْـذُوهُمْ بِـهِ وَيُنْشئُهُمْ عَلَيْـهِ،
fīmā yaghḍūhum bihī wa yunshuʾuhum ʿalayh
in that through which He feeds them and with which He makes them grow.
فَخَلَقَ لَهُمُ اللَّيْـلَ لِيَسْكُنُوا فِيْهِ مِنْ حَرَكَاتِ التَّعَبِ،
fakhalaqa lahumu allayla liyaskunu fihi min harakat al-taʿabi
He created for them the night, that they might rest in it (10:67) from tiring movements
وَنَهَضَاتِ النَّصَبِ، وَجَعَلَهُ لِبَاساً لِيَلْبَسُوا مِنْ رَاحَتِهِ وَمَنَامِهِ،
wa nahạðāti al-naşabi, wa jaʿalahu libāsan liyalbasū min rāhatihi wa manāmihi
and wearisome exertions and He made it a garment for them that they might be clothed in its ease and its sleep,
فَيَكُونَ ذَلِكَ جَمَاماً وَقُوَّةً، وَلِيَنَالُوا بِهِ لَذَّةً وَشَهْوَةً.
fayakūna dhālika jamāman wa quwwatan, wa liyanālu bihi lazzatan wa shahwatan
that it might be for them refreshment and strength, that they might reach therein pleasure and passion.
وَخَلَقَ لَهُمُ النَّهارَ مُبْصِراً لِيَبْتَغُوا فِيهِ مِنْ فَضْلِهِ،
wa khalaqa lahumun-nahara mubṣirā liyabtaghū fīhi min faḍlih
He created for them the daytime, giving sight, that they might seek within it of His bounty (ref. 17:12)
وَلِيَتَسَبَّبُوا إلَى رِزْقِهِ، وَيَسْرَحُوا فِي أَرْضِهِ،
waliyatasabbabu ila rizqihi, wayasraḥu fi ardhihi
find the means to His provision, and roam freely in His earth,
طَلَباً لِمَا فِيـهِ نَيْلُ الْعَاجِلِ مِنْ دُنْيَاهُمْ،
ṭalaban limā fīhi naylul-ʿājili min dunyāhum
searching for that through which to attain the immediate in their life in this world
وَدَرَكُ الاجِلِ فِيْ اُخْراهُمْ. بِكُلِّ ذلِكَ يُصْلِحُ شَأنَهُمْ،
wa daraka al-ajli fee ukhrahum. bikulli dhalika yuslihu sha'anahum
and to achieve the deferred in their life to come. Through all of this He sets right their situation,
وَيَبْلُو أَخْبَارَهُمْ وَيَنْظُرُ كَيْفَ هُمْ فِي أَوْقَاتِ طَاعَتِـهِ،
wa yablu akhbarahum wa yanzuru kayfa hum fi awqati ta'atih
tries their records, and watches their state in the times for obeying Him,
وَمَنَازِلِ فُـرُوضِهِ وَمَوَاقِعِ أَحْكَامِهِ
wa manazili furūdhihi wa mawāqiʿi aḥkāmihi
the waystations of His obligations, and the places of His ordinances,
لِيَجْزِيَ الَّذِينَ أسَاءُوا بِمَا عَمِلُوا وَيَجْزِيَ الَّذِينَ أَحْسَنُوا بِالْحُسْنَى.
li-yajziya alladhina asa'u bima 'amilu wa yajziya alladhina ahsanu bil-husna
that He may repay those who do evil with what they have done and repay those who do good with goodness.
اللَّهُمَّ فَلَكَ الْحَمْدُ عَلَى مَافَلَقْتَ لَنَا مِنَ الإصْبَاحِ،
allāhumma fala(k)a al-ḥamdu ʿalā mā fala(q)ta lanā mina al-ṣubḥ
O God, to Thee belongs praise for the sky Thou hast split into dawn for us,
وَمَتَّعْتَنَا بِهِ مِنْ ضَوْءِ النَّهَارِ،
wa mattaʿtanā bihī min ḍawʾi al-nahār
giving us to enjoy thereby the brightness of daytime,
وَبَصَّرْتَنَا مِنْ مَطَالِبِ الاقْوَاتِ،
wa baṣṣartanā min maṭālibi al-aqwāt
showing us sought-after nourishments,
وَوَقَيْتَنَا فِيهِ مِنْ طَوارِقِ الآفاتِ.
wa waqaytanā fīhi min ṭawāriqi al-āfāt
and protecting us from the striking of blights.
أَصْبَحْنَا وَأَصْبَحَتِ الاَشْياءُ كُلُّهَا بِجُمْلَتِهَا لَكَ:
aṣbaḥnā wa aṣbaḥatil ashya'u kulluhā bi jumlatihā laka:
In the morning we and all things, every one, rise for Thee,
سَمَاؤُها وَأَرْضُهَا وَمَا بَثَثْتَ
samāʾuhā wa arḍuhā wa mā baththta
the heaven and the earth and what Thou hast scattered
فِي كُلِّ وَاحِد مِنْهُمَا سَاكِنُهُ وَمُتَحَرِّكُهُ وَمُقِيمُهُ
fī kulli wāḥid minhumā sākinuhu wa mutaḥarrikuhu wa muqīmuhu
in each, the still and the moving, the resident
وَشَاخِصُهُ وَمَا عَلا فِي الْهَواءِ وَمَا كَنَّ تَحْتَ الثَّرى
wa shākhisuhu wa mā ʿalā fī al-hawāʾ wa mā kanna taḥta al-tharra
and the journeying, what towers up in the air and what hides under the ground.
أَصْبَحْنَا فِي قَبْضَتِكَ
ʾaṣbaḥnā fī qabḍatika
We rise in the morning in Thy grasp:
يَحْوِينَا مُلْكُكَ وَسُلْطَانُكَ وَتَضُمُّنَا مَشِيَّتُكَ،
yaḥwīnā mulkuka wa sulṭānuka wa taḍummunā mashīyatuka
Thy kingdom and authority contain us and Thy will embraces us.
وَنَتَصَرَّفُ عَنْ أَمْرِكَ، وَنَتَقَلَّبُ فِيْ تَدْبِيرِكَ
wa nataṣarrafu ʿan amrika, wa nataqallabu fi tadbiirika
We move about by Thy command and turn this way and that through Thy governing.
لَيْسَ لَنَا مِنَ الامْرِ إلاّ مَا قَضَيْتَ
laysa lana min al-amri illa ma qadayta
We own nothing of the affair except what Thou hast decreed
وَلا مِنَ الْخَيْـرِ إلا مَـا أَعْطَيْتَ.
wa laa min al-khayri illa ma a'tayta
and nothing of the good except what Thou hast given.
وَهَذَا يَوْمٌ حَادِثٌ جَدِيدٌ، وَهُوَ عَلَيْنَا شَاهِدٌ عَتِيدٌ ،
wa-ha-dha yawmun ha-dithun ja-didun, wa-huwa 'alay-na sha-hidun 'a-tidun
This is a fresh, new day, over us a ready witness.
إنْ أحْسَنَّا وَدَّعَنَا بِحَمْد، وَإِنْ أسَأنا فارَقَنا بِذَمّ
ʾin aḥsannā waddaʿanā biḥamd, waʾin asaʾanā faraqanā bidhimm
If we do good, it will take leave from us with praise, and if we do evil, it will part from us in blame.
اللَّهُمَ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَد وَآلِـهِ
allāhumma ṣalli ʿalā muḥammad wa ālihī
O God, bless Muhammad and his Household,
وَارْزُقْنَـا حُسْنَ مُصَاحَبَتِهِ وَاعْصِمْنَا
wa arzuqna husna muṣāḥabatihī wa aʿṣimnā
provide us with the day's good companionship and preserve us
مِنْ سُوْءِ مُفَارَقَتِهِ بِارْتِكَابِ جَرِيرَة،
min suu'i mufaraqatihi bi-irtikabi jarirah
against parting from it badly by doing a misdeed
أَوِ اقْتِرَافِ صَغِيرَة أوْ كَبِيرَة.
aw iqtiraf sagheeratan aw kabeeratan
or committing a sin, whether small or great!
وَأجْزِلْ لَنَا فِيهِ مِنَ الْحَسَناتِ وَأَخْلِنَا فِيهِ مِنَ السَّيِّئاتِ.
wa-ajzil lana fihi min al-hasanat wa-akhlinā fihi mina al-sayyi'at
Make our good deeds within it plentiful empty us therein of evil deeds,
وَامْلا لَنَا مَا بَيْنَ طَرَفَيْهِ حَمْداً وَشُكْراً وَأجْراً وَذُخْراً وَفَضْلاً وَإحْسَاناً.
wa-amla lana ma bayna ṭarafayhi ḥamdan wa-shukran wa-ajran wa-ẓukhran wa-faḍlan wa-iḥsanan
and fill what lies between its two sides for us with praise and thanksgiving, wages and stores, bounty and beneficence!
اللَّهُمَّ يسِّرْ عَلَى الْكِرَامِ الْكَاتِبِينَ مَؤُونَتَنَا،
allāhumma yassir ʿalā al-kirām al-kātibīna maʾūnatanā
O God, ease our burden on the Noble Writers,
وَامْلا لَنَا مِنْ حَسَنَاتِنَا صَحَائِفَنَا.
wa-amla lana min hasanatina saha'ifana
fill our pages for us with our good deeds,
وَلاَ تُخْزِنَا عِنْدَهُمْ بِسُوءِ أَعْمَالِنَا.
walā tukhzinā ʿindahum bisūʾi aʿmālinā
and degrade us not before them with our evil works!
اللَّهُمَّ اجْعَلْ لَنَا فِي كُلِّ سَاعَة مِنْ سَاعَاتِهِ حَظّاً مِنْ عِبَادِكَ ،
allāhumma ijʿal lana fī kulli sāʿatin min sāʿātihī ḥazzaan min ʿibādik
O God, appoint for us in each of the day's hours a share from Thy servants,
وَنَصِيباً مِنْ شُكْرِكَ وَشَاهِدَ صِدْق مِنْ مَلائِكَتِكَ
wa-naṣībān min shukrika wa-shāhida ṣidqan min malāʾikatika
a portion of giving thanks to Thee, and a truthful witness among Thy angels!
أللَّهَّمَ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّد وَآلِهِ ،
allāhumma ṣalli ʿalā muḥammad wa ālih
O God, bless Muhammad and his Household
وَاحْفَظْنَا مِنْ بَيْنِ أيْدِينَا وَمِنْ خَلْفِنَا وَعَنْ أيْمَانِنَا وَعَنْ شَمَائِلِنَا،
wa aḥfaẓnā min bayni ʾaydīnā wa min khalfinā wa ʿan ʾaymāninā wa ʿan shamāʾil
and safeguard us from before us and behind us, from our right hands and our left hands
وَمِنْ جَمِيْعِ نَوَاحِيْنَا حِفْظاً عَاصِماً مِنْ مَعْصِيَتِكَ
wa min jamiʿi nawāhīnā ḥifẓan ʿāṣiman min maʿṣiyatika
and from all our directions, a safeguarding that will preserve from disobeying Thee,
هَادِياً إلَى طَاعَتِكَ مُسْتَعْمِلاً لِمَحَبَّتِكَ.
hādiyān ilā ṭāʿatika mustaʿmilan li-maḥabbatika
guide to obeying Thee, and be employed for Thy love!
اللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّد وَآلِهِ
allāhumma ṣalli ʿalā muḥammad wa ālihī
O God, bless Muhammad and his Household
وَوَفِّقْنَا فِي يَوْمِنَا هذا ولَيْلَتِنَا هذِهِ وَفِي جَمِيعِ أيّامِنَا
wa waffiqnā fī yawminā hādhā wa laylatinā hādhīhi wa fī jamiʿi ayyāminā
and give us success in this day of ours, this night of ours, and in all our days,
لاسْتِعْمَالِ الْخَيْرِ وَهِجْـرَانِ الشَرِّ وَشُكْـرِ ألنِّعَمِ
la astiʿmaalil khayri wahijraanish sharrish shukrinniʿami
to employ the good, stay away from the evil, give thanks for favours,
وَاتّبَـاعِ السُّنَنِ وَمُجَانَبَةِ البِدَعِ
wa at-tibāʿi as-sunnah wa mujānabati al-bidʿi
follow the Sunna's norms, avoid innovations,
وَالأمْرِ بِـالْمَعْرُوفِ وَالنَّهيِ عَنِ الْمُنْكَرِ
wal-amri bil-maʿrūfi wan-nahyi ʿani-l-munkari
enjoin good behaviour, forbid the disapproved,
وَحِياطَةِ الإسْلاَمِ وَانْتِقَاصِ الْبَاطِلِ وَإذْلالِهِ
waḥiyāṭi al-islāmi wa intiqāṣi al-bāṭili wa ʾidhlālihi
defend Islam, diminish falsehood and abase it,
وَنُصْرَةِ الْحَقِّ وَإعْزَازِهِ ، وَإرْشَادِ الضَّالِّ ،
wa-nuṣraṭi al-haqqi wa-iʿzāzihi, wa-irshādi al-ḍālli
help the truth and exalt it, guide the misguided,
وَمُعَاوَنَةِ الضَّعِيفِ وَإدْرَاكِ اللَّهِيْفِ.
wa muʿāwanati al-ḍaʿīfī wa idrāki allahīf
assist the weak, and reach out to the troubled!
اللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّد وَآلِهِ
allāhumma ṣalli ʿalā muḥammad wa ālihī
O God, bless Muhammad and his Household
وَاجْعَلْهُ أيْمَنَ يَوْم عَهِدْنَاهُ ،
wajʿalhu aymana yawm ʿahidnāhu
and make this the most fortunate day we have known,
وَأَفْضَلَ صَاحِب صَحِبْنَاهُ ،
wa-afḍala ṣāḥibi ṣaḥibnāh
the most excellent companion we have accompanied,
وَخَيْرَ وَقْت ظَلِلْنَا فِيْهِ.
wa khayra waqtin ẓalilna fiih
and the best time in which we have lingered!
وَاجْعَلْنَا مِنْ أرْضَى مَنْ مَرَّ عَلَيْهِ اللَّيْـلُ وَالنَّهَارُ مِنْ جُمْلَةِ خَلْقِكَ
wa-aj'alna min arḍā man marrā ʿalayhi al-laylu wa al-nahāru min jumlati khalqika
Place us among the most satisfied of all Thy creatures whom night and day have passed by,
وأَشْكَـرَهُمْ لِمَا أوْلَيْتَ مِنْ نِعَمِكَ
wa-ashkharahum lima awlayta min niʿamika
the most thankful of them for the favours Thou hast done,
وَأقْوَمَهُمْ بِمَـا شَرَعْتَ مِنْ شَرَائِعِكَ ،
wa aqwaamahum bimaa sharaʿta min sharaaʾiki
the firmest of them in the laws Thou hast set down in the Shari'a,
وَأَوْقَفَهُمْ عَمَّا حَذَّرْتَ مِنْ نَهْيِكَ.
wa aqfahum ʿamma haddarthahum min nahyika
and the most unyielding of them toward the prohibited acts against which Thou hast cautioned!
اللَهُمَّ إنِّي اشْهِدُكَ وَكَفَى بِكَ شَهِيداً وَاُشْهِدُ سَمَاءكَ وَأَرْضَكَ
allāhumma innī ash-haduka wa kafā bika shahīdan wa ushhidu samā'aka wa arḍaka
O God, I call Thee to witness - and Thou art sufficient witness - and I call Thy heaven and Thy earth to witness
وَمَنْ أَسْكَنْتَهُما مِنْ مَلائِكَتِـكَ وَسَائِرِ خَلْقِكَ فِي يَوْمِي هَذَا ،
wa-man 'askan-ta-hu-ma min mala'ikatika wa-sa'iri khalqika fi yawmi ha-tha
and Thy angels and Thy other creatures who inhabit them in this my day,
وَسَاعَتِي هَذِهِ ، وَلَيْلَتِي هَذِهِ ، وَمُسْتَقَرِّي هَذَا ،
wasāʿatī hadhihi, wa laylatī hadhihi, wa mustaqarri hadha
this my hour, this my night, and this my resting place,
أنِّي أَشْهَدُ أَنَّكَ أنْتَ اللهُ الِذَّي
'anni ash-hadu annaka anta allah al-ladhi..
that I bear witness that Thou art God,
لاَ إلهَ إلاّ أَنْتَ قَائِمٌ بِـالْقِسْطِ ،
lā ilāha illā anta qā'im bil-qisṭ
other than whom there is no god, Upholding justice,
عَدْلٌ فِي الْحُكْم ، رَؤُوفٌ بِالْعِبَادِ ،
ʿadlun fi al-ḥukm, raʾūfun bil-ʿibād
Equitable in judgement, Clement to the servants (2:207),
مَالِكُ المُلْكِ رَحِيمٌ بِالْخَلْقِ ،
māliku al-mulki raḥīmun bil-khalqi
Master of the kingdom (3:26), Compassionate to the creatures,
وَأَنَّ مُحَمَّداً عَبْدُكَ وَرَسُولُكَ وَخِيرَتُكَ مِنْ خَلْقِكَ ،
waʾanna muḥammadan ʿabduka wa rasuluka wa khīratuka min khalaqika
and that Muhammad is Thy servant and Thy messenger, Thy chosen from among Thy creatures.
حَمَّلْتَهُ رِسَالَتَكَ فَأدَّاهَا وَأَمَرْتَهُ بالنُّصْحِ لاُِمَّتِهِ فَنَصَحَ لَهَا.
ḥammaltahu risālatuka fa'addāhā wa'amartahu bil-nuṣḥi li'ummatihi fanasaḥa lahā
Thou didst charge him with Thy message and he delivered it; Thou didst command him to counsel his community and he counselled it.
اللَّهُمَّ فَصَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّد وَآلِهِ أكْثَرَ مَا صَلَّيْتَ عَلَى أَحَد مِنْ خَلْقِكَ
allāhumma faṣalli ʿalā muḥammad wa ālih akthara mā ṣallayta ʿalā aḥad min khalqik
O God, so bless Muhammad and his Household more than Thou hast blessed any of Thy creatures!
وَآتِهِ عَنَّا أَفْضَلَ مَا آتَيْتَ أَحَداً مِنْ عِبَادِكَ
wa ātihī ʿannā afḍala mā ātayta aḥadan min ʿibādika
Give him for our sake the best Thou hast given any of Thy servants,
وَاجْزِهِ عَنَّا أَفْضَلَ وَأكْرَمَ مَا جَزَيْتَ أَحَداً مِنْ أَنْبِيائِـكَ عَنْ أمَّتِهِ.
wa-ajzihī ʿannā afḍala wa-akrama mā jazayta aḥadan min anbiyāʾika ʿan ummatihi
and repay him on our behalf better and more generously than Thou hast repaid any of Thy prophets on behalf of his community!
إنَّـكَ أَنْتَ الْمَنَّانُ بِالْجَسِيمِ الْغَـافِر لِلْعَظِيمِ ،
'innaka 'anta al-mannān bil-jasīmi al-ghāfir lil-'aẓīm
Thou art All-kind with immensity, the Forgiver of the great,
وَأَنْتَ أَرْحَمُ مِنْ كُلِّ رَحِيم ،
wa anta arḥamu min kulli rahim
and Thou art more merciful than every possessor of mercy!
فَصَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّد وَآلِهِ
faṣalli ʿalā muḥammad wa ālih
So bless Muhammad and his Household,
الطَّيِّبِينَ الطَّاهِرِينَ الأَخْيَارِ الانْجَبِينَ.
al-ṭayyibīna al-ṭāhirīna al-akh'yār al-anjabin
the good, the pure, the chosen, the most distinguished!
