His Supplication In Seeking Needs From God
Duaa
أللَّهُمَّ يَا مُنْتَهَى مَطْلَبِ الْحَاجَاتِ
allāhumma yā muntaḥā maṭlab al-ḥājāt
O God, O ultimate object of needs!
وَيَا مَنْ عِنْدَه نَيْلُ الطَّلِبَاتِ
wa yā man ʿindahu naylu al-ṭalibāt
O He through whom requests are attained!
وَيَا مَنْ لا يَبِيْعُ نِعَمَهُ بالأثْمَانِ
wayā man lā yabīʿu niʿamahu bil-ʾathmān
O He whose favours are not bought by prices!
وَيَا مَنْ لا يُكَدِّرُ عَطَايَاهُ بِالامْتِنَانِ
wa yā man lā yukaddiru ʿatāyāhū bil-ʾamtinān
O He who does not muddy His gifts by the imposition of obligations!
وَيَا مَنْ يُسْتَغْنَى بِهِ وَلاَ يُسْتَغْنَى عَنْهُ
wa yā man yustaghna bihī walā yustaghna ʿanhu
O He along with whom nothing is needed and without whom nothing can be done!
وَيَا مَنْ يُرْغَبُ إلَيْهِ وَلا يُرْغَبُ عَنْهُ.
wa yā man yurghabu ilayhi wa lā yurghabu ʿanhu
O He toward whom desire is ever directed and never turned away!
وَيَا مَنْ لا تُفنى خَزَآئِنَهُ الْمَسَائِلُ
wa yā man lā tufnā khazāʾinahu al-masāʾilu
O He whose treasuries cannot be exhausted by demands!
وَيَا مَنْ لاَ تُبَدِّلُ حِكْمَتَهُ الْوَسَائِلُ.
wa yā man lā tubaddilu ḥikmatahu al-wasāʾilu
O He whose wisdom cannot be altered by any means!
وَيَا مَنْ لاَ تَنْقَطِعُ عَنْهُ حَوَائِجُ الْمُحْتَاجِينَ
wa yā man lā tanqaṭiʿu ʿanhu ḥawāʾiju al-muḥtājīn
O He from whom the needs of the needy are never cut off!
وَيَا مَنْ لاَ يُعَنِّيهِ دُعَاءُ الدَّاعِينَ
wa yā man lā yu'annīhi du'ā'u al-dā'īn
O He who is not distressed by the supplications of the supplicators!
تَمَدَّحْتَ بِالْغَنَاءِ عَنْ خَلْقِكَ وَأَنْتَ أَهْلُ الْغِنَى عَنْهُمْ
tamaddaḥta bil-ghinā'i ʿan khalqika wa anta ahlul-ghinā'i ʿanhum
Thou hast lauded Thyself for having no need for Thy creatures, and it suits Thee to have no need for them,
وَنَسَبْتَهُمْ إلَى الفَقْرِ وَهُمْ أَهْلُ الْفَقْرِ إلَيْكَ.
wa nasabtahum 'ila al-faqri wa hum 'ahl al-faqri 'ilayka
and Thou hast attributed to them poverty, and it suits them to be poor toward Thee.
فَمَنْ حَاوَلَ سَدَّ خَلَّتِهِ مِنْ عِنْدِكَ
faman ḥāwala sadda khallatihi min ʿindika
So he who strives to remedy his lack through what is with Thee
وَرَامَ صَرْفَ الْفَقْر عَنْ نَفْسِهِ بِكَ فَقَدْ طَلَبَ حَاجَتَهُ
wa rāma ṣarfa al-faqr ʿan nafsihi bika faqad ṭalaba ḥājatahu
and wishes to turn poverty away from himself through Thee has sought his need
فِي مَظَانِّها وَأَتَى طَلِبَتَهُ مِنْ وَجْهِهَا
fī maẓānnihā wa'atā ṭalibatahu min wajhihā
in the most likely place and come to his request from the right quarter.
وَمَنْ تَوَجَّهَ بِحَاجَتِهِ إلَى أَحَد مِنْ خَلْقِكَ أَوْ جَعَلَهُ سَبَبَ نُجْحِهَا
wa man tawajjah bihaajatihi ila ahad min khalkika aw jaʿalahu sababan nujhihaa
But he who turns in his need toward one of Thy creatures or assigns the cause of its being granted
دُونَكَ فَقَدْ تَعَرَّضَ لِلْحِرْمَانِ
dūnaka faqad taʿarraḍa lilḥirman
to other than Thee, has exposed himself to deprivation
وَاسْتَحَقَّ مِنْ عِنْدِكَ فَوْتَ الاِحْسَانِ
wa-istaḥaqqā min ʿindika fawt al-iḥsān
and deserves to miss Thy beneficence.
أللَّهُمَّ وَلِي إلَيْكَ حَاجَةٌ قَـدْ قَصَّرَ عَنْهَـا جُهْدِي
allāhumma wali ilayka ḥājaẗun qad qaṣṣara ʿanhā juhdi
O God, I have a need of Thee: my exertion has fallen short of it
وَتَقَطَّعَتْ دُونَهَا حِيَلِي
wa taqattaʿat doonaha hiyalii
and my stratagems have been cut back before reaching it.
وَسَوَّلَتْ لِيْ نَفْسِي رَفْعَهَا إلَى مَنْ يَرْفَعُ حَوَائِجَهُ إلَيْكَ
wa sawwalat li nafsi raf'aha ila man yarf'u hawa'ijahu ilayk
My soul induced me to present it to him who presents his needs to Thee
وَلاَ يَسْتَغْنِي فِي طَلِبَاتِهِ عَنْكَ
wa lā yastaġnī fī ṭalibātihī ʿanka
and can do nothing without Thee in his requests,
وَهِيَ زَلَّةٌ مِنْ زَلَلِ الْخَاطِئِينَ
wa hiya zallatun min zallil-khāṭi'īn
but this is one the slips of the offenders,
وَعَثْرَةٌ مِنْ عَثَراتِ الْمُذْنِبِينَ
waʿathratun min ʿatharatil-mudhnibin
one of the stumbles of the sinners!
ثُمَّ انْتَبَهْتُ بِتَذْكِيرِكَ لِي مِنْ غَفْلَتِي
thumma 'intabahtu bitadhkirika li min ghaflati
Then through Thy reminding me, I was aroused from my heedlessness,
وَنَهَضْتُ بِتَوْفِيقِكَ مِنْ زَلَّتِي
wa nahadtu bi-tawfiqika min zallati
through Thy giving success, I stood up from my slip,
وَ رَجَعتُ وَنَكَصْتُ بِتَسْـدِيدِكَ عَنْ عَثْـرَتِي
wa rajaʿtu wanakastu bitasdīdika ʿan ʿathrati
and through Thy pointing the way, I returned and withdrew from my stumble.
وَقُلْتُ: سُبْحَانَ رَبّي كَيْفَ يَسْأَلُ مُحْتَاجٌ مُحْتَاجـاً
wa qultu: subḥāna rabbī kayfa yas'al muḥtājun muḥtājan
I said: Glory be to my Lord! How can the needy ask from the needy?
وَأَنَّى يَرْغَبُ مُعْدِمٌ إلَى مُعْدِم؟
waʾannā yarġabu muʿdimun ilā muʿdim?
How can the destitute beseech the destitute?
فَقَصَدْتُكَ يا إلهِي بِالرَّغْبَةِ
faqaṣadtu-ka yā ilāhī bil-raġbah
So I went straight to Thee, my God, in beseeching,
وَأَوْفَدْتُ عَلَيْكَ رَجَائِي بِالثِّقَةِ بِكَ
wa awfadtu ʿalayka rajāʾī bit-thiqati bika
and I sent Thee my hope with trust in Thee.
وَعَلِمْتُ أَنَّ كَثِيرَ مَا أَسْأَلُكَ يَسِيرٌ فِي وُجْدِكَ
wa ʿalimtu anna kathira maa as'aluka yaseerun fi wujdika
I came to know that the many I request from Thee are few before Thy wealth,
وَأَنَّ خَطِيرَ مَا أَسْتَوْهِبُكَ حَقِيرٌ فِيْ وُسْعِكَ
wa anna khaṭīra ma astawhibuka haqīrun fi wusʿika
the weighty I ask from Thee is vile before Thy plenty;
وَأَنَّ كَرَمَكَ لاَ يَضِيقُ عَنْ سُؤَال أحَد
waanna karamaka la yadīqu ʿan suʾāli aḥad
Thy generosity is not constrained by anyone's asking,
وَأَنَّ يَدَكَ بِالْعَطايا أَعْلَى مِنْ كُلِّ يَد.
wa-anna yadaka bil-'ataya a'la min kulli yad
Thy hand is higher in bestowing gifts than every hand!
أللَهُمَّ فَصَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّد وَآلِهِ وَاحْمِلْنِي بِكَرَمِكَ عَلَى التَّفَضُّلِ
allāhumma faṣalli ʿalā muḥammad wa ālihi wa aḥmilnī bika ramika ʿalā at-tafaḍḍ
O God, so bless Muhammad and His Household, take me through They generosity to Thy gratuitous bounty
وَلاَ تَحْمِلْنِي بِعَدْلِكَ عَلَى الاسْتِحْقَاقِ
walā tahmilnī biʿadlika ʿalā al-istiḥqāq
And take me not through Thy justice to what I deserve!
فَما أَنَا بِأَوَّلِ رَاغِبِ رَغِبَ إلَيْكَ فَأَعْطَيْتَهُ وَهُوَ يَسْتَحِقُّ الْمَنْعَ
famā anā bi-awwali rāghibi raghiba ilayka fa-aʿṭaytahu wa huwa yastahiqq al-manaʿa
I am not the first beseecher to beseech Thee and Thou bestowed upon him while he deserved withholding,
وَلاَ بِأَوَّلِ سَائِل سَأَلَكَ فَأَفْضَلْتَ عَلَيْهِ وَهُوَ يَسْتَوْجِبُ الْحِرْمَانَ.
walā bi-ʾawwali sāʾil saʾalaka faʾafdaltahu wa-huwā yastawjibu al-ḥirmān
nor am I the first to ask from Thee and Thou wast bounteous toward him while he merited deprivation.
أللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّد وَآلِهِ
allāhumma ṣalli ʿalā muḥammad wa ālih
O Allah, bless Muhammad and his Household,
وَكُنْ لِدُعَائِي مُجِيباً وَمِنْ نِدائِي قَرِيباً
wa kun li duʿāʾi mujīban wa min nidāʾi qarīban
respond to my supplication, come near my call,
وَلِتَضَرُّعِي رَاحِماً وَلِصَوْتِي سَامِعاً
wa li-taḍarruʿī rāḥimān wa li-ṣawtī sāmiʿan
have mercy on my pleading, listen to my voice,
وَلاَ تَقْطَعْ رَجَائِي عَنْكَ وَلا تَبُتَّ سَبَبِي مِنْكَ
walā taqṭaʿ rajāʾī ʿanka wa-lā tabutta sababī minka
cut not short my hope for Thee, sever not my thread to Thee,
وَلاَ تُوَجِّهْنِي فِي حَاجَتيْ هَذِهِ وَغَيْرِهَا إلى سِوَاكَ
wa lā tuwajjihnī fī ḥājati hādhīhi wa ghayrihā ilā siwāka
turn not my face in this my need, and other needs, away from Thee,
وَتَوَلَّنِي بِنُجْحِ طَلِبَتِي وَقَضاءِ حَاجَتِي
wa tawallanī binujḥi ṭalibatī wa qaḍā'ī ḥājatī
attend for my sake to the fulfillment of my request, the granting of my need,
وَنَيْلِ سُؤْلِي قَبْلَ زَوَالِي عَنْ مَوْقِفِي هَذَا
wa nāyli su'li qabli zawāli 'an mawqifi hadhā
and the attainment of what I have asked before I leave this place
بِتَيسِيرِكَ لِيَ الْعَسِيْرَ وَحُسْنِ تَقْدِيرِكَ لِي فِي جَمِيعِ الأُمُورِ.
bi tayseerika liyal-ʿasira wa husni taqdeerika li fi jameeʿil-umoori
through Thy making easy for me the difficult and Thy excellent ordainment for me in all affairs!
وَصَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّد وَآلِهِ صَلاَةً دَائِمَةً نَامِيَةً لاَ انْقِطَاعَ لأِبَدِهَا
wa ṣalli ʿalā muḥammad wa ālihī ṣalātan dāʾimatan nāmiyatān lā inqiṭāʿa
Bless Muhammad and his Household with a permanent, ever-growing blessing, whose perpetuity has no cutting off
وَلا مُنْتَهَى لأِمَدِهَا وَاجْعَلْ ذَلِكَ عَوْناً لِيْ وَسَبَباً لِنَجَاحِ طَلِبَتِي إنَّكَ وَاسِعٌ كَرِيْمٌ.
wala muntaḥā li-amadihā wa'aj'al dhālika ʿawna liyy wa-sababan li-najāḥi ṭalabatī innaka w
and whose term knows no limit, and make that a help to me and a cause for the granting of my request! Thou art Boundless, Generous!
وَمِنْ حَاجَتِي يَا رَبِّ كَذَا وَكَذَا
wa min ḥājatī yā rabbī kadha wa kadha
And of my needs,my Lord, are such and such
وَتَذْكُرُ حَاجَتَكَ ثمّ تَسْجُـدُ وَتَقُولُ فِي سُجُودِكَ:
wa tadhkur haajataka thumma tasjudu wa taqulu fi sujoodika:
(Here you should state your needs, then prostrate yourself, and say in your prostration:)
فَضْلُكَ آنَسَنِي وَإحْسَانُكَ دَلَّنِي
faḍluka ʾānasani wa iḥsānuka dallanī
Thy bounty has comforted me and Thy beneficence has shown the way,
فَأَسْأَلُكَ بِكَ وَبِمُحَمَّـد وَآلِهِ صَلَواتُكَ عَلَيْهمْ أَنْ لاَ تَرُدَّنِي خَائِباً.
fa-as'aluka bika wa bi-muhammadin wa ālihi ṣalātuka ʿalayhim an lā taruddanī khāʾiban
So I ask Thee by Thee and by Muhammad and his Household (Thy blessings be upon them) that Thou sendest me not back in disappointment!
