His Supplication In Hardship, Effort, And Difficult Affairs
Duaa
أَللَّهُمَّ إنَّكَ كَلَّفْتَنِي مِنْ نَفْسِي مَا أَنْتَ أَمْلَكُ بِهِ مِنِّي،
allāhumma innaka kallafatanī min nafsī mā anta amliku bihī minnī
O God, Thou hast charged me concerning myself with that which belongs more to Thee than to me.
وَقُدْرَتُكَ عَلَيْهِ وَعَلَيَّ أَغْلَبُ مِنْ قُدْرَتِي،
wa qudratuka ʿalayhi wa ʿalayya aghlabu min qudrati
Thy power over it and over me is greater than my power,
فَأَعْطِنِي مِنْ نَفْسِي مَا يُرْضِيْكَ عَنِّي،
fa'ātini min nafsi mā yurḍīka 'annī
so give me in myself what will make Thee pleased with me
وَخُذْ لِنَفْسِكَ رِضَاهَا مِنْ نَفْسِي فِي عَافِيَة.
wakhudh li nafsika ridhaha min nafsi fi 'afiya
and take for Thyself Thy good pleasure in my self's well-being!
أللَّهُمَّ لاَ طَاقَةَ لِي بِالجَهْدِ ، وَلاَ صَبْرَ لِي عَلَى البَلاَءِ،
allāhumma lā ṭāqata lī bil-jahdi, wa lā ṣabr lī ʿalal-balāʾi
O God, I have no endurance for effort, no patience in affliction,
وَلاَ قُوَّةَ لِي عَلَى الْفَقْرِ، فَلاَ تَحْظُرْ عَلَيَّ رِزْقِي،
wala quwwata liya 'ala al-faqr, fa la tahzur 'alayya rizqi
no strength to bear poverty. So forbid me not my provision
وَلاَ تَكِلْنِيْ إلَى خَلْقِكَ بَلْ تَفَرَّدْ بِحَاجَتِي، وَتَولَّ كِفَايَتِي،
wala takilni ila khalkika bal tafarrad bihajati, wa tawallā kifāyati
and entrust me not to Thy creatures, but take care of my need alone and Thyself attend to sufficing me!
وَانْظُرْ إلَيَّ وَانْظُرْ لِي فِي جَمِيْعِ اُمُورِي،
wa anẓur ilayya wa anẓur li fi jamii'i umoori
Look upon me and look after me in all my affairs,
فَإنَّكَ إنْ وَكَلْتَنِي إلَى نَفْسِي عَجَزْتُ عَنْهَا،
fa'innaka in wakaltani ila nafsi 'ajaztu 'anha
for if Thou entrustest me to myself, I will be incapable before myself
وَلَمْ اُقِمْ مَا فِيهِ مَصْلَحَتُهَا،
wa lam uqim ma feehi maslahatuhā
and fail to undertake that in which my best interest lies.
وَإنْ وَكَلْتَنِي إلَى خَلْقِكَ تَجَهَّمُونِي،
wa-in wakaltanī ilá khalqika tajahhamūnī
If Thou entrustest me to Thy creatures, they will frown upon me,
وَإنْ أَلْجَأتَنِيْ إلَى قَرَابَتِي حَرَمُونِي،
wa in aljaitani ila qarabati haramooni
and if Thou makest me resort to my kinsfolk, they will refuse to give to me;
وَإنْ أَعْطَوْا أَعْطَوْا قَلِيْلاً نَكِداً،
wa in aʿṭaw aʿṭaw qalīlan nakidān
if they give, they will give little and in bad temper,
وَمَنُّوا عَلَيَّ طَوِيلاً وَذَمُّوا كَثِيراً.
wa mannū ʿalayya ṭawīlān wa ḏammū kathīran
making me feel long obliged and blaming me much.
فَبِفَضْلِكَ أللَّهُمَّ فَأَغْنِنِي، وَبِعَظَمَتِكَ فَانْعَشنِي،
fabi-faḍlika allāhumma fa-agh-ninī, wa-bi-ʿaẓamatika fa-unʿash-nī
So through Thy bounty, O God, free me from need, through Thy mightiness, lift me up,
وَبِسَعَتِكَ فَابْسُطْ يَدِي، وَبِمَا عِنْدَكَ فَاكْفِنِي.
wa bisatika fabṣuṭ yadī, wa bimā indaka fākfinī
through Thy boundless plenty, open my hand, and with that which is with Thee, suffice me!
أللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّد وَآلِهِ،
allāhumma ṣalli ʿalā muḥammad wa ālih
O God, bless Muhammad and his Household,
وَخَلِّصْنِي مِنَ الْحَسَدِ، وَاحْصُرْنِي عَن الذُّنُوبِ،
wa khallissni minal hasadi, wa ahsurni an-thonoob
rid me of envy, encircle me against sins,
وَوَرِّعْنِي عَنِ الْمَحَارِمِ، وَلا تُجَرِّئْنِي عَلَى الْمَعَاصِي،
wa warriʿnī ʿanil-maḥārimi, wa lā tujarriʾnī ʿalal-maʿāṣī
make me abstain from things unlawful, give me not the boldness of disobedient acts,
وَاجْعَلْ هَوايَ عِنْدَكَ، وَرِضَايَ فِيمَا يَرِدُ عَلَيَّ مِنْكَ،
wajʿal hawāya ʿindaka wa-riḍāya fīmā yaridu ʿalayya minka
assign me love for that which is with Thee and satisfaction with that which comes to me from Thee,
وَبَارِكْ لِي فِيْمَا رَزَقْتَنِي، وَفِيمَا خَوَّلْتَنِي،
wa bārik lī fīmā razaqtanī, wa fīmā khawwaltanī
bless me in that which Thou providest me, that which Thou conferrest upon me,
وَفِيمَا أَنْعَمْتَ بِهِ عَلَيَّ، وَاجْعَلْنِي فِي كُلِّ حَالاَتِي
wa fīmā anʿamta bihī ʿalayya, wajʿalnī fī kulli ḥālatī
and that through which Thou favourest me, and make me in all my states
مَحْفُوظَاً مَكْلُوءاً مَسْتُوراً مَمْنُوعاً مُعَاذاً مُجَاراً.
maḥfūẓan maklūʾan mastūran mamnūʿan muʿāḏan mujāran
safeguarded, watched, covered, defended, given refuge, and granted sanctuary!
أللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّد وَآلِهِ
allāhumma ṣalli ʿalā muḥammad wa ālihī
O God, bless Muhammad and his Household
وَاقْضِ عَنِّي كُلّ مَا أَلْزَمْتَنِيهِ وَفَرَضْتَهُ عَلَيَّ لَكَ فِي وَجْه مِنْ وُجُوهِ طَاعَتِكَ،
waqḍi ʿannī kulla mā alzamtanīhi wa faraḍtahu ʿalayya laka fī wajhi min wujūhi ṭ
and let me accomplish everything which Thou hast enjoined upon me or made obligatory for me toward Thee, in one of the ways of Thy obedience,
أَوْ لِخَلْق مِنْ خَلْقِكَ وَإنْ ضَعُفَ عَنْ ذَلِكَ بَدَنِي، وَوَهَنَتْ عَنْهُ قُـوَّتِي،
aw li-khalq min khalqika wa-in da'ufa 'an dhalika badani, wa-wahant 'anhu quwwati
or toward one of Thy creatures, though my body be too frail for that, my strength too feeble,
وَلَمْ تَنَلْهُ مَقْدِرَتِي، وَلَمْ يَسَعْهُ مَالِي وَلاَ ذَاتُ يَدِي، ذَكَرْتُهُ أَوْ نَسِيتُهُ
walamlan talhu maqdirati, walaml yasahhu malii wala dhatu yadi, dhakartuhu aw naseetuhu.
my power not able to reach it, and my possessions and what my hand owns not encompass it, and whether I have remembered it or forgotten it.
هُوَ يَا رَبِّ مِمَّا قَدْ أَحْصَيْتَهُ عَلَيَّ وَأَغْفَلْتُهُ أَنَا مِنْ نَفْسِي،
huwa ya rabbi mimma qad ahsaytahu ʿalayya wa aghfalthu anā min nafsi
It, my Lord, is among that which Thou hast counted against me while I have been heedless of it in myself.
فَأَدِّهِ عَنِّي مِنْ جَزِيْلِ عَطِيَّتِكَ وَكَثِيرِ مَا عِنْدَكَ،
fa'addihi 'anni min jazīli 'aṭiyyatika wa kathīri mā 'indaka
Let me perform it through Thy plentiful giving and the abundance which is with Thee
فَإنَّكَ وَاسِعٌ كَرِيمٌ حَتَّى لاَ يَبْقَى عَلَيَّ شَيْ مِنْهُ
fa'innaka wasi'un karimun hatta la yabqa 'alayya shay'un minhu
- for Thou art Boundless, Generous - so that nothing of it may remain against me,
تُرِيدُ أَنْ تُقَاصَّنِي بِهِ مِنْ حَسَنَاتِي،
turīdu an tuqāṣṣanī bihī min ḥasanātī
lest Thou wouldst wish to settle accounts for it from my good deeds
أَوْ تُضَاعِفَ بِهِ مِنْ سَيِّئاتِي يَوْمَ أَلْقَاكَ يَا رَبِّ.
aw tudhaa'ifa bihi min sayyi'ati yawmi alqaaka yaa rabbi
or to compound my evil deeds on the day I meet Thee, my Lord!
أَللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّد وَآلِهِ
allāhumma ṣalli ʿalā muḥammad wa ālihī
O God, bless Muhammad and his Household
وَارْزُقْنِي الرَّغْبَةَ فِي الْعَمَـلِ لَكَ لآخِـرَتِي،
wa-rzuqny al-raghbah fi al-ʿamal lika li-akhirati
and provide me with desire to serve Thee for the sake of my state in the hereafter,
حَتَّى أَعْرِفَ صِدْقَ ذلِكَ مِنْ قَلْبِي،
ḥattā ʾaʿrifa ṣidqa dhālika min qalbī
such that I know the truthfulness of that [desire] in my heart,
وَحَتَّى يَكُونَ الْغَالِبُ عَلَيَّ الزُّهْدُ فِي دُنْيَايَ،
wa hattā yakūna al-ghālibu ʿalayya al-zuhdu fī dunyāya
be dominated by renunciation while in this world,
وَحَتَّى أَعْمَلَ الْحَسَنَاتِ شَوْقاً،
wa-ḥattá aʿmala al-ḥasanāti shawqan
do good deeds with yearning,
وَآمَنَ مِنَ السَّيِّئاتِ فَرَقاً وَخَوْفاً،
wa āmana mina as-sayyiāti faraqan wa khawfan
and remain secure from evil deeds in fright and fear!
وَهَبْ لِي نُوراً أَمْشِي بِهِ فِي النَّاسِ، وَأَهْتَدِي بِهِ فِي الظُّلُماتِ،
wahab li nuran amshi bihi fi al-nas, wa-ahtadi bihi fi al-thulumat
And give me 'a light whereby I may walk among the people' (ref.6:122), be guided in the shadows,
وَأَسْتَضِيءُ بِهِ مِنَ الشَّكِّ وَالشُّبُهَـاتِ .
wa-astadī'u bihī mina ash-shakki wa ash-shubuhāt.
and seek illumination in doubt and uncertainty!
اللّهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّد وَآلِهِ
allāhumma ṣalli ʿalā muḥammad wa ālihi
O God, bless Muhammad and his Household
وَارْزُقْنِي خَوْفَ غَمِّ الْوَعِيْـدِ،
warzuqni khawfa ghammil-wa'eed
and provide me with fear of the threatened gloom
وَشَوْقَ ثَوَابِ الْمَوْعُودِ حَتَّى أَجِدَ لَذَّةَ مَا أَدْعُوكَ لَهُ،
wa-shawqa thawabi al-maw'udi hatta ajida ladhata ma ad'uuka lahu
and yearning for the promised reward, such that I may find the pleasure of that for which I supplicate Thee
وَكَأْبَةَ مَا أَسْتَجِيرُ بِكَ مِنْهُ.
wa ka'batan ma astajiru bika minhu
and the sorrow of that from which I seek sanctuary in Thee!
أللَّهُمَّ قَـدْ تَعْلَمُ مَا يُصْلِحُنِي مِنْ أَمْرِ دُنْيَايَ وَآخِـرَتِي،
allāhumma qad taʿlamu mā yuṣliḥunī min amri dunyāyā wa ākhiratī
O God, Thou knowest what will set my affairs right in this world and the next,
فَكُنْ بِحَوَائِجِيْ حَفِيّاً.
fakun bihawāʾijī ḥafiyyan
so be ever gracious toward my needs!
أللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّد وَآلِ مُحَمَّد
allāhumma ṣalli ʿalā muḥammad wa āli muḥammad
O God, bless Muhammad and Muhammad's Household
وَارْزُقْنِي الْحَقَّ عِنْدَ تَقْصِيرِي فِي الشُّكْرِ لَكَ
wa arzuqni al-haqq'a 'inda taqṣeeri fi al-shukri laka
and provide me with what is Thy right when I fall short in thanking Thee
بِمَا أَنْعَمْتَ عَلَيَّ فِي اليُسـرِ وَالْعُسْرِ وَالصِّحَّـةِ وَالسَّقَمِ
bimā an'amta 'alayya fīl-yusr wal-'usr was-ṣiḥḥati was-saqam
for that through which Thou hast favoured me in ease and difficulty, health and sickness,
حَتَّى أَتَعَرَّفَ مِنْ نَفْسِي رَوْحَ الرِّضَا
ḥattā ʾataʿarrafamin nafsī rūḥar-riḍā
such that I may come to know in myself repose in satisfaction
وَطُمَأنِينَةَ النَّفْسِ مِنِّي بِمَا يَجِبُ لَكَ فِيمَا يَحْدُثُ
wa ṭumāʾinnaẗ al-nafs minnī bimā yajibu laka fīmā yaḥduthu
and serenity of soul in that which Thou hast made incumbent upon me
فِي حَالِ الْخَوْفِ وَالاَمْنِ،
fī ḥāli al-khawfi wal-amni
in whatever states may occur: fear and security,
وَالرِّضَا وَالسُّخْطِ، وَالضَّرِّ وَالنَّفْعِ.
wal-riḍā wa-s-sukhṭi, wa-ḍ-ḍarri wa-n-naʿfi
satisfaction and displeasure, loss and gain!
أللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّد وَآلِهِ
allāhumma ṣalli ʿalā muḥammad wa ālih
O God, bless Muhammad and his Household
وَارْزُقْنِي سَلاَمَةَ الصَّدْرِ مِنَ الْحَسَدِ
wa arzuqni salamata al-sadr min al-hasad
and provide me with a breast safe from envy,
حَتَّى لاَ أَحْسُدَ أَحَداً مِنْ خَلْقِكَ عَلَى شَيْء مِنْ فَضْلِكَ،
ḥatta lā ʾaḥsuda ʾaḥadan min khalqika ʿalā shayʾin min faḍlika
such that I envy none of Thy creatures and in anything of Thy bounty
وَحَتَّى لاَ أَرى نِعْمَـةً مِنْ نِعَمِـكَ عَلَى أَحَد مِنْ خَلْقِكَ
wa-ḥattā lā ʾarā niʿmatan min niʿamika ʿalā ʾaḥad min khalqika
and such that I see none of Thy favours toward any of Thy creatures
فِي دِيْن أَوْ دُنْيا، أَوْ عَافِيَة أَوْ تَقْوَى،
fī dīn aw dunyā, aw ʿāfiyah aw taqwá
in religion or this world, well-being or reverential fear,
أَوْ سَعَة أَوْ رَخاء، إلاّ رَجَوْتُ لِنَفْسِي أَفْضَلَ ذلِكَ،
aw saʿah aw rakhaa', illa rajawtu linafsi afḍala dhālika
plenty or ease, without hoping for myself better than it
بِكَ وَمِنْكَ وَحْدَكَ لاَ شَرِيكَ لَكَ.
bi-ka wa-min-ka wa-ḥdak, lā sharīka lak
through and from Thee alone, who hast no associate!
أللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّـد وَآلِـهِ
allāhumma ṣalli ʿalā muḥammad wa ālih
O God, bless Muhammad and his Household
وَارْزُقْنِي التَّحَفُّظَ مِن الْخَطَايَا،
wa-rzuqnī at-taḥaffuẓa min al-khaṭāyā
and provide me with caution against offenses
وَالاحْتِرَاسَ مِنَ الزَّلَلِ فِي الدُّنْيَا وَالآخِرَةِ،
wal-iḥtirās mina azzalal fī d-dunyā wal-ākhira
and wariness against slips in this world and the next
فِي حَالِ الرِّضَا وَالْغَضَبِ،
fī ḥāli ar-riḍā wal-ghaḍabِ،
in the state of satisfaction and wrath,
حَتَّى أكُونَ بِمَا يَرِدُ عَلَيَّ مِنْهُمَا بِمَنْزِلَة سَوَاء،
ḥattá ʾakūna bimā yaridu ʿalayya minhumā bimanzilati sawāʾa
such that I may remain indifferent toward that which enters upon me from the two states,
عَامِلاً بِطَاعَتِكَ مُؤْثِراً لِرِضَاكَ عَلَى مَا سِوَاهُمَا فِي الأَوْلِياءِ وَالأعْدَاءِ
ʿamilān bi-ṭāʿatika muʾthirān li-riḍāka ʿalā mā siwāhumā fī al-awliy
work toward Thy obedience, and prefer it and Thy good pleasure over all else in both friends and enemies.
حَتّى يَأْمَنَ عَدُوِّي مِنْ ظُلْمِي وَجَوْرِي،
ḥattā yaʾmana ʿaduwwī min ẓulmī wa jawrī
Then my enemy may stay secure from my wrongdoing and injustice
وَيَيْأَسَ وَلِيِّي مِنْ مَيْلِي وَانْحِطَاطِ هَوَايَ،
wa yaya'sa waliyyi min mayli wa anhiṭaṭi hawayā
and my friend may despair of my inclination and the bent of my affection.
وَاجْعَلنِي مِمَّنْ يَدْعُوكَ مُخْلِصاً في الرَّخَاءِ
wa-jaʿalnī mimmann yadʿūkā mukhliṣan fī r-raḵāʾ
Make me one of those who supplicate Thee with sincerity in ease
دُعَـاءَ الْمُخْلِصِينَ الْمُضْطَرِّينَ لَـكَ فِي الدُّعَاءِ
duʿāʾ al-mukhliṣīn al-muḍṭarṛīn laka fī al-duʿāʾ
with the supplication of those who supplicate Thee with sincerity in distress!
إنَّكَ حَمِيدٌ مَجيدٌ .
ʾinnaka ḥamīdun majīdun
Verily Thou art Praiseworthy, Glorious.
