His Supplication In Fear

Duaa

allāhumma innaka khalaqtanī sawiyyan

O God, Thou created me without fault,

wa rabbaytanī ṣaghīran, wa razaqtanī makfiyyan

nurtured me when small, and provided me with sufficiency.

allāhumma innī wajadtu fīmā anzalta min kitābika

O God, I found in the Book which Thou sent down

wa bashsharta bihi ʿibādika

and through which Thou gave good news to Thy servants,

'an qult: (ya 'ibadiyya alladhina asrafu 'ala anfusihim...)

that Thou said, O My servants who hare been prodigal against yourselves,

la taqnato min rahmati allah, inna allah yaghfiru al dhunub jamī'an

do not despair of God's mercy, surely God forgives all sins,

wa qad taqaddama minnī mā qad ʿalimta

but there has gone ahead from me what Thou knowest

wa mā anta aʿlamu bihī minnī

(and of which Thou knowest more than I)!

fayā saw'atā mimmā aḥṣāhu ʿalayya kitābuka

O the shame of what Thy Book has counted against me!

falawlā al-mawāqifu allatī 'u'milu min 'afwik

Were it not for the places where I expectantly hope for Thy pardon,

al-ladhī shamila kulla shay'in lālqaytu biyadī

which enfolds all things, I would have thrown myself down [in despair]!

wa law anna ahadan istata'a al-haraba

Were anyone able to flee from his Lord,

min rabbihi lakuntu ana ahaqqu bil-harabi

I would be the most obligated to flee from Thee!

wa-anta laa takhfā ʿalayka khāfiyatun fil-ardh

But not a secret in earth and heaven is concealed from Thee,

wa lā fī as-samāʾi illā atayta bihā

except that Thou bringest it.

wakafā bika jāzīan, wakafā bika ḥasīban

Thou sufficest as a recompenser! Thou sufficest as a reckoner!

allāhumma innaka ṭālibī in anā harabtu

O God, surely Thou wouldst seek me if I flee

wa mudrikī in anā farartu

and catch me if I run.

fahā ana dhā bayna yadayka khāḍiʿun dhaleelun rāghimun

So here I am before Thee, abject, lowly, abased.

in tuʿaḏḏibnī faʾinnī liḏalika ahlu

If Thou chastisest me, I am worthy of that,

wa huwa yā rabbi minka ʿadlun

and it would be, my Lord, an act of justice from Thee.

wa in taʿfu ʿannī faqadīman shamalanī ʿafwuka

But if Thou pardonest me, anciently has Thy pardon enfolded me

sṭanī ʿāfiyatka

and Thy well-being garmented me!

fa-as'aluka allahumma bilmakhzuni min asma'ika

So I ask Thee, O God, by Thy names stored in Thy treasury

wa bimā wārathu al-ḥujubu min bahā'ika

and Thy splendour masked by the veils!

illā raḥimta hādhīhi al-nafs al-jazūʿah

If Thou hast no mercy upon this anxious soul

wa-ha-dhi-hi al-ri-ma-ta al-ha-luʿa-ta

and these uneasy, decaying bones -

al-latī lā tastaṭīʿu ḥarra shamsika

he cannot endure the heat of Thy sun,

fakayfa tastaṭīʿu ḥarra nārika?

so how can he endure the heat of Thy Fire?

wal-latī lā tastaṭīʿu ṣawta raʿdika

He cannot endure the sound of Thy thunder,

fakayfa tastateeʿu sawta ghadabika?

so how can he endure the sound of Thy wrath?

fārhamnī allāhumma fa-innī amru'un haqīrun, wa-khaṭarī yasīrun

So have mercy upon me, O God, for I am a vile man and my worth is little.

wa laysa ʿadhabī mimmā yazīdu fī mulkika mithqāla dharratin

Chastising me will not add the weight of a dust mote to Thy kingdom.

walaw anna `adhabī mimmā yazeedu fī mulkika

Were chastising me something that would add to Thy kingdom,

las'altuka al-ṣabara ʿalayhi

I would ask Thee for patience to bear it

wa-ʾaḥbabtu ʾan yakuuna ḏạlika lak

and would love for it to belong to Thee;

walakin sultaanuka allahumma a'dhamu

but Thy authority, my God, is mightier,

wa mulkuka adwamu min an tazeeda feehi taa'atul muti'een

and Thy kingdom more lasting, than that the obedience of the obeyers should increase it

aw tunqiṣa minhu maʿṣiyatu almudhnibin

or the disobedience of the sinners diminish it!

farḥamnī yā arḥama al-rāḥimīn

So have mercy upon me, O Most Merciful of the merciful!

wa tajāwaz ʿannī yā dhā l-jalāli wal-ikrām

Show me forbearance, O Possessor of majesty and munificence!

wa tub ʿalayya innaka anta at-tawwabu ar-rahim

And turn toward me, Surely Thou art Ever-turning, All-compassionate!
